In India the installed capacity of wind power generation is almost 7% and about 2% of total energy is from wind. Despite turning out to be a boon, wind power generation is still perceived to be power system unfriendly; even in the present scenario of peak power demand shortages as well as energy shortages. The case studies presented here indicate as to how wind energy could on the one hand be termed as a reasonably reliable source and on the other can assist the power system in periods of low frequency. Further, certain recommendations on power system planning criteria along with new initiatives in forecasting of wind energy and energy storage are touched upon.
