With many factors affecting the cost and reliability of electric energy in the future, it is imperative that all resources are optimized and operated as efficiently as possible. Many approaches exist to increase efficiency both on the supply side and the demand side of electric energy creation and use. Energy innovation concentrates on implementing demand side remedies to supply side problems by supporting conservation, energy efficiency, demand response and distributed generation. This review will define one utility's efforts to fully implement and measure the results of its energy innovation efforts. The results will illustrate that implementing energy innovation is well worth the effort, especially considering the potential issues with reliability and cost that utilities and their consumers of the future will face.
