Currently multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are becoming more and more popular in wireless communication networks. Several Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols have been developed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) with MIMO links. Most of these existing protocols either cannot support broadcast service or are topology-dependent. In this paper, an efficient protocol which is topology-independent and also supports broadcast for MIMO ad hoc networks, termed topology-independent broadcast (MIMO-TIB) is proposed. To evaluate its performance, MIMO-TIB is applied in several different networks with MIMO links. The analysis results show that MIMO-TIB improves the capacity in broadcasting. Further, MIMO-TIB is independent of topology changes, which makes it can be applied in ad hoc networks in which nodes are mobile.
