In a letter dated March 23, 1978, Prof. R.E. Kalman wrote Dear Mr. Khargonekar: I am very happy to inform you that you have been admitted to the Graduate School of the University of Florida and been awarded financial aid to pursue your studies here. I had just finished my undergraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India. I had taken some advanced courses in control and estimation and had read some of his papers. Looking back, this admission letter from Prof. Kalman is perhaps the most important event that has shaped my professional career. I recall my great excitement at being able to pursue my doctorate under the world-famous master!
