A novel flux-path control module was developed for magnetic suspension systems with multiple magnetic sources. The module has a pair of ferromagnetic plates and a single voice coil motor (VCM) for driving both the plates. The ferromagnetic plates are inserted between a permanent magnet and a suspended object (floator). The gap between the plates is controlled by using the VCM. Since the flux from the permanent magnet to the floator is a function of the gap, the attractive force acting on the floator can be controlled with the module. Basic characteristics of the module were measured. Noncontact suspension was achieved with the developed module.
