A wide variety of system requires reliable personal recognition schemes to either confirm or determine the identity of an individual requesting their services. The purpose of such schemes is to ensure that the rendered services are accessed only by a legitimate user and no one else. Palmprint image of a person is considered for identifying an individual uniquely. Palmprint identification involves image preprocessing, an efficient algorithm for fast palmprint recognition using texture analysis, palmprint image matching and calculation of biometric parameters. It also provides facility to change orientation of palmprint image. A robust image coordinate system is defined and central part of palmprint image is extracted to facilitate image alignment for feature extraction. In addition, a 2D Gabor phase encoding scheme is proposed for palmprint feature extraction and representation, feature extraction, thus saving storage space and reduce time of authenticating a person efficiently. Normalized Hamming distance is used for palmprint image matching. Biometric parameters acceptance rate and rejection rate are calculated for given palmprint database and a graph is drawn for different threshold.
