The ecological footprint of Pinggu District in 2001 and 2005 was calculated and comprehensively analyzed. Results showed that the ecological footprint, ecological carrying capacity and ecological deficit in 2001 were 2.1464 hm2/cap, 0.3344 hm2/cap & 1.81204 hm2/cap respectively, and then 3.6172 hm2/cap, 1.8794 hm2/cap & 1.7378 hm2/cap in 2005. By contrast the results of 2001 with 2005's, it was revealed that the ecological deficit in 2005 is higher than 2001, and the intensity of human activities was enhanced. In the same time, the ecological carrying capacity increased dramatically, so the ecological construction of Pinggu District is feasible in some extent. However, the ecological deficit of Pinggu is not significantly reduced, the overall situation of ecological environment is still not optimistic. The resources use efficiency and conservation-oriented production & consumption patterns should be vigorously promoted, the urban and its industrial development, should adhere to the sustainable development rules, so as to reduce ecological footprint, and ease the ecological deficit to curb the trend of "partial improvement and overall deterioration" in eco-environment construction.
