Customary of standard control analysis, current control strategies are often tested and compared through applying a step change to the reference current to determine its performance under transients. However, the reality of a step event occurring in this manner for a real system seems unlikely. For a more realistic transient performance indication we should consider the active power filter (APF) application as it is one of the most demanding applications for current control. Given that using APF for such analysis is not commonly done, we shall examine some existing current control methods using an APF application as the benchmark platform. It is found that APF is not only suitable platform for transient test, but also for three other important behaviours of current control.
