Consideration of the structure and the operation principle of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), it is possible to obtain super high speed drive. Therefore, a three-phase 6/2 SRM, the speed of which is 130,000 rpm, is adopted for super high speed drive. Based on the two-dimensional finite element method (FEM), the torque-angle characteristics of 6/2 SRM are analyzed and the motor structure is improved to maximize the starting torque and reduce the torque ripple. Moreover, the optimum design is examined by varying the stator and rotor parameters of the improved structure so as to maximize starting torque.
