This paper presents a fuzzy sliding mode controller for a vector controlled induction motor fed by a pulse width modulation voltage source inverter. The proposed control scheme combines a sliding mode controller and a fuzzy controller. Few fuzzy rules are used for this strategy control. The sliding mode control is used to achieve robust performance against parameter variations and external disturbances. The problem with this conventional controller is that it has large chattering on the torque and the drive is very noisy. In order to reduce chattering, the sign function is substituted with a fuzzy control law which draws the system state variables into pre-specified bounds of sliding mode surface. The proposed algorithm was simulated by Matlab/Simulink software and simulation results show that the performance of the control scheme is robust and the chattering problem is solved.
