Summary form only given. Different techniques have been reported to compensate the distortion effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in long haul optical transmission systems. The system presented here basically uses a liquid crystal optical polarization controller and a polarizer. It features simplicity, ability to compensate a wide range of differential group delays, and also avoids the utilization of mechanical moving parts, as well as return fiber feedback or high-frequency electronic equalization.
