The purpose of this study is to find out w hat measures were used to survey the medieval
chartered towns in central Poland. The author examined the mensuration systems used in this
period in a dozen of towns taken by a way of example. The analysis led to a determination
of the most likely module of measurement employed in the Middle Ages in the area in question.
It appears that the dimensions of m arket squaes and plots in central Poland and other
regions of Poland were similar. Seemingly, the surveyors universally employed the same
measures. In numerous towns these medieval elements are still clearly visible. The market
squares, likewise in the past, fulfil the key functions and the plots keep their original size.
The analysis of the m ensuration of towns in the form er voivodships of Łęczyca and
Sieradz proves that they were laid out after the Silesian measurem ent pattern that was
employed in this region in the 13th and the 14th century.
