In an overview of literature about the history of Armenian art in Poland, the author describes two significant exhibitions, one from the year 1932 and the other from 1999, together with the preserved publications and photographic documentation which constitute the starting material for the research. The relics, relocated during the WW II, are now in the Polish and Ukrainian collections. The documentation kept in the Archive of the Foundation of Culture and Heritage of Polish Armenians in Warsaw might be helpful during research. It concerns Armenian architectural monuments as well as painting and miniature painting. The Armenians appeared in the Republic of Poland very early. Already in the 14th century there were some settlements in Lvov (Lviv), Luck (Lutsk), Kamieniec Podolski and Jazlowiec, and in the next centuries they also settled in Bar, Tysmienica, Podchajce and Zamosc. In 1363 the construction of the cathedral dedicated to the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed (the name was later changed into the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). In 1398 the St. Nicholas Church in Kamieniec Podolski was funded. During the next centuries temples were built in Jazlowiec, Zamosc, Bar and Stanislawów (Ivano-Frankovsk). The research on the Armenian art in Poland dates back to the 19th century when the first scientific studies concerning Armenian history and culture were written, mainly in the Lvov circles. The research was interrupted by the outbreak of the WW II. Due to the border changes, the Polish Armenians living in the borderlands of the Republic of Poland emigrated to the west of the country or to Gdansk, Gliwice, Kraków or Warsaw, bringing with them the most precious manuscripts, paintings and archive materials. For years these were kept in the church archives and private houses and finally they were gathered in the Archive of the Foundation of Culture and Heritage of Polish Armenians in Warsaw and in the St. Peter and Paul Church in Gdansk. During the recent years a number of scientific papers have been written on that subject but we are still faced with many scholarly challenges in this field.
