Our objective was to compare the antimicrobial resistance trends among clinically relevant anaerobes against 9 different antibiotics over two periods, 2008–2012 and 2002–2007. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by determining the MICs using E test method. The interpretation of results was according to the breakpoints recommended by the Clinical Laboratory and Standard Institute (CLSI)...
Recent studies suggest animals, in particular farm and companion animals, as possible reservoir for Clostridium difficile human pathogenic strains. The aim of this study was to give a first characterization of C. difficile isolates from Italian swine and dogs. In total, 10 different PCR-ribotypes were identified among porcine strains and six among canine strains. The predominant type found among porcine...
Evolution of antibiotic resistance in the anaerobes was reviewed using recent data covering 2000–2013 as compared to previous years. All studies reported growing moxifloxacin resistance in Bacteroides/Parabacteroides spp. in Europe and USA and in Clostridium difficile in Europe. In half or more studies, the resistance rates in Bacteroides/Parabacteroides spp. to amoxicillin–clavulanate or ampicillin–sulbactam...
We report a case caused by a multidrug-resistant (MDR) Bacteroides fragilis strain isolated from abdominal fluid of a male patient with complex underlying diseases. The patient had received antibiotics prior to the presented case. As far as we know, this case with a MDR B. fragilis is the first from Hungary, and Eastern-Europe, as well.
The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro activities of fidaxomicin and other antibiotics against 188 Clostridium difficile strains collected from different centers of Hungary. C. difficile isolates showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) range for fidaxomicin of ≤0.008–0.5 mg/L, with a MIC90 of 0.125 mg/L. Only four isolates (2.1%) had 0.5 mg/L MIC to fidaxomicin. The obtained MICs...
In the beginning of 2012, a study was conducted to obtain an overview of Clostridium difficile infections (CDIs) in Polish hospitals. The collection of 83 toxigenic C. difficile isolates obtained from this hospital-based survey was used to identify antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. Among the C. difficile isolates analyzed, 48 (57.8%) belonged to PCR ribotype 027, 21 (25.3%) to its closely related...
Molecular typing data on antimicrobial-resistant Propionibacterium strains are limited in the literature. We examined antimicrobial resistance profiles and the underlying resistance mechanisms in Propionibacterium spp. isolates recovered from patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris in Greece. The clonallity of the resistant Propionibacterium acnes isolates was also investigated.Propionibacterium...
Bacteroides fragilis constitutes the most frequent anaerobic bacterium causing bacteremia in humans. The genetic background for antimicrobial resistance in B. fragilis is diverse with some genes requiring insertion sequence (IS) elements inserted upstream for increased expression. To evaluate whole genome shotgun sequencing as a method for predicting antimicrobial resistance properties, one meropenem...
Anaerobic bacteria play a significant role in many endogenous polymicrobial infections. Since antimicrobial resistance among anaerobes has increased worldwide, it is useful to provide local susceptibility data to guide empirical therapy. The present study reports recent data on the susceptibility of clinically relevant anaerobes in a University Hospital Centre (UHC) Split, Croatia.A total of 63 Gram-negative...
Thirty healthy subjects (15 males and 15 females) were randomly assigned in three groups and clindamycin (150 mg qid) or ciprofloxacin (500 mg bid) or placebo was given for a 10-day period. Skin, nasal, saliva, faeces samples were collected at day – 1, day 11, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months and 12 months post administration for microbiological analysis. Ciprofloxacin or clindamycin had no impact on the...
As part of an ESCMID Study Group on Anaerobic Infections (ESGAI) project, a study was conducted to measure the antibiotic susceptibilities and corresponding gene contents of 53 Bacteroides fragilis group strains isolated in Romania. The antibiotic resistance data was comparable with the data found for other East-European countries. Here, no resistant isolate was found for imipenem, metronidazole and...
With the emergence of antibiotic resistance among Bacteroides fragilis group isolates the need of susceptibility testing in routine laboratories is increasing. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the disk diffusion method for susceptibility testing in case of different clinical isolates of Bacteroides spp by comparing zone diameter results with MICs obtained earlier during an Europe-wide...
The antibiotic susceptibility profile of the Bacteroides fragilis group, Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC), Fusobacterium spp., Prevotella spp., Veillonella spp. and Bilophila wadsworthia for amoxicillin, amoxicillin–clavulanic acid, clindamycin and metronidazole was determined. Human clinical isolates were isolated between 2011 and 2013 at the Microbiological Diagnostic Laboratory of the University...
In total 122 non-duplicate Bacteroides, Prevotella and Fusobacterium spp isolated from cancer patients between 2004 and 2014 were involved in this study. Most of the strains belonged to the B. fragilis group (55%), followed by Prevotella strains (34.4%) and Fusobacterium spp (10.6%). The species identification was carried out by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry...
