The economic reforms implemented in China throughout the 1980s and 1990s have been accompanied by the emergence of new inequalities in China's cities. Focusing on health and health care provision, this paper examines two major sources of new inequality: increasing segmentation in the workplace and the mass migration of peasants from the countryside to the cities. The latter phenomenon has created a new urban underclass, usually referred to as the floating population .
