There are many reasons why a patient may be incontinent. Often, the physician can develop a clear picture of what these may be by using history, physical examination, and simple office tests. Although it is important that a specific diagnosis be made before a patient is submitted to surgery, it is reasonable to use medical management on the basis of a presumptive diagnosis because this will allow for a relief of symptoms in the majority of patients.
