Deprotonation of 4-nitrophenyl-phenylcyanomethane and 4-bromophenyl-4-nitrophenylcyanomethane by cis 1,2-bis(diethylaminomethyl)cyclohexane (DEAMCH) base with proton sponge-like character in acetonitrile is studied by kinetic as well as FT-IR spectroscopic methods. The mechanism of the proton transfer reaction is proposed and compared with those of other proton sponge bases.
