Food habits, movements and home ranges, lek site characteristics, nesting habitats, brood rearing and summer habitats, and wintering areas are described for Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus. Implications of grazing, herbicide spraying, burning and mechanical treatments on habitat quality are reviewed, and guidelines are recommended for sharp-tailed grouse habitat maintenance and improvement. Management or indeed any disturbance during the breeding season should be prohibited if they might impact courtship and breeding. Trees close to streams should be maintained and protected, and livestock use of riparian areas should be carefully managed or eliminated.
