Evaluation of competing El Nino/Southern Oscillation theories requires the identification of separate spectral peaks in equatorial wind and SST time series. To sharpen this identification, the seasonal-to-inter-annual variability of these fields was examined by the data-adaptive method of multi-channel singular spectrum analysis. Two major interannual oscillations are found in the equatorial SST and surface zonal wind fields.
