The aim of the present investigations was to compare sensorimotor stimuli and training effects using different balance shoes: MBT ® shoe (MBT), Finnamic ® -shoe (FIN), and Reflex Control ® shoe (RC).In two cross sectional studies we assessed (a) postural control and EMG activity in single-leg stance and (b) EMG activity during treadmill walking, respectively. Moreover, we evaluated (c) effects of RC and MBT training on postural control in a longitudinal study. Barefoot condition was chosen as control condition in all experiments. In cross sectional experiments (a) and (b) we found enhanced sensorimotor demands and increased EMG activity when MBT and RC were applied. RC showed advantages regarding neuromuscular activation. Following a controlled training for six weeks (c) RC induced significant improvements in postural control (p=0,014 and 0,041) However, there was no significant difference found between MBT and control subjects (p=0,518 and 0,625).In conclusion, our results indicate that shoes with unstable sole constructions (MBT and especially RC) can induce sensorimotor training stimuli leading to improved neuromuscular control in dynamic situations.
