The performance of an ideal frequency demodulator is investigated for a modulated carrier which is corrupted by both additive and multiplicative noise. This situation is encountered, for example, in laser vibrometry. An approximate analytical expression is derived for the autocorrelation function of the phase derivative, from which the demodulator output spectrum may be found by Fourier transform. The result is tested by numerical simulation and found to have a wide range of validity. The implications for signal detection are discussed.
