The experiments described in this paper were conducted in order to establish the suitability of brown coal ash and sand from brown coal mine as the components of mediums for greenhouse tomato and lettuce cultivation. Contents of heavy metals in these components were below the level in noncontaminated soils. The suitability of the mediums comprising peat and sand in 3:1 and 2:1 ratios for lettuce was similar to peat substrate alone, while the yield of tomato was higher if the 3:1 ratio was used. 10% addition of brown coal ash had an advantageous effect on the yields of both of the tested vegetables.
