Densification of Sm 2 Fe 1 7 N 3 has been performed by hot isostatic press (HIP), using Zn as an additive. Since Sm 2 Fe 1 7 N 3 decomposes to SmN and α-Fe at above 600 o C, conventional sintering is not applicable. Hipping was mainly performed at 450 o C for 30min under 200MPa. The addition of Zn powder increased the coercivity of hipped Sm 2 Fe 1 7 N 3 . On the other hand, the magnetization was decreased by the dilution effect of non-magnetic Zn. The size of the magnet was 9mm in diameter and 30mm in length. The relative density was ca. 90%. In order to increase the magnetization, magnetic alignment was performed for Sm 2 Fe 1 7 N 3 powder. When the magnetic field was applied normal to the uniaxial pressure in forming process, the (BH) m a x of the hipped Sm 2 Fe 1 7 N 3 was 168kJ/m 3 (coercivity: 564kA/m, remanence: 1.1T, saturation magnetization: 1.3T, Zn content: 5 mass%).
