A new form of vanadium oxide with the formula V 6 O 1 4 has been synthesized in aqueous media from the parent material V 6 O 1 3 . The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal and chemical analysis. After dehydration, the material was found to be isostructural to V 6 O 1 3 . Electrochemical measurements conducted in half cells with V 6 O 1 4 as the cathode material and lithium metal as the anode show that this material exhibits the same festures as its parent compound. Due to the higher average oxidation state of vanadium, a 10% increase in specific capacity has been achieved over V 6 O 1 3 . Excellent cycling capabilities are also demonstrated.
