The anterior chest wall is articulated and semi-rigid. It is made of bone, cartilage and muscle. Respiratory mechanics depend on its intrinsic constitution. Tissue ageing or disease of its constituents may alter functioning at lower energy cost. The chest wall is also where the muscles from the cervical, scapular and abdominal areas meet. Therefore, its main function is associated to those anatomical regions. However, their accessory respiratory function can be important when compensating insufficiency of the intrinsic constituents of the chest wall.
