This project will involve clubs participating in the Central Highlands Netball Region over a geographic area covering Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, Daylesford, Lexton, Lake Bolac area, Ballarat, and Derrinallum. There will be four General Practitioners participating in the project, along with a specialist Sports Medicine Physician. It is anticipated that the project will involve in excess of 150 Level O and above coaches and will impact on at least 5000 netball players. The project will utilise a ‘train the trainer’ approach for General Practitioners incorporating early intervention, injury surveillance and related sports safety issues. There will be a training program developed for coaches and administrators, Sports Safe Central Highlands, which general practitioners will facilitate in conjunction with the Injury Prevention and Control Research Group from the University of Ballarat, within the sporting setting. A significant aspect of this project will be the development and trialing of a safety audit tool (SESA). A component of SESA will be injury surveillance and data collected will be used to develop further strategies for injury prevention in netball. The injury surveillance component will be a modified version of a sports injury surveillance form developed by Dr Caroline Finch, MUARC. Coaches, administrators and General Practitioners will be trained in the use of SESA as part of their participation.
