What sets our age apart from any other is the speed of change. We have less time to absorb new information and react to changed conditions. Communication is faster, wide ranging, and can travel through and around national borders. The new information technology is changing the nature of diplomacy, and can affect the established processes of national politics, international relations, business, and government. We live in an age of massive historical transition that is disruptive, often painful, and upsets long-held beliefs. But developments of new and improved technology are certain to continue and will need the attention of policy makers. The age will require courage and leadership, and the spread of freedom around the globe to avoid political and spiritual bankruptcy.
