Ion storage rings with electron cooling are very useful for studies of interaction between ions and electrons. When molecular ions are involved, the interaction frequently leads to dissociative recombination. Several studies of dissociative recombination from different storage rings have been reported during the last two years. This paper presents a brief review of the subject.
Results obtained from the study of ionic reactions at the University of Rennes are reviewed. A brief description of the apparatus available in our laboratory is given. The historical evolution of the flowing afterglow device is emphasized as it is directly connected to one of the major puzzling questions in dissociative recombination studies: what is the rate coefficient for the dissociative recombination...
The analysis of flowing afterglow plasmas containing H +3 or D +3 ions indicates that the de-ionization of such plasmas does not occur by simple dissociative recombination of ions with electrons. An alternative model of de-ionization is proposed in which electrons are captured into H 3** autoionizing Rydberg states that are stabilized by collisional mixing...
The theory of dissociative recombination (DR) is reviewed. A new semiclassical-classical path theory of DR is presented. It is applicable to DR with or without curve crossing between the potential energy surfaces associated with molecular ion AB + and neutral AB * dissociative states. A new mechanism is proposed for e-H +3 recombination. Rydberg molecules are first...
