The design of a cladding pumped, erbium doped, microstructured fiber amplifier is refined via a tailor made computer code which takes into account the transitions of the rare earth ion populations, the electromagnetic power propagation of pump and signal, the secondary ion–ion interactions. A gain close to G=32.7dB is simulated for a fiber about 53.4m long at the signal wavelength λ s =1536nm, for a pump power P p (0)=3W and a co-propagating signal power P s (0)=100μW.
