This paper presents a three-dimensional unsteady state heat conduction model to predict the groove geometry on laser dressed grinding wheel surface. The thermal model describes the transient thermal phenomena that occur within the heterogeneous grinding wheel after laser pulse is directed on the wheel surface. The heterogeneity of grinding wheels is considered by developing a grinding wheel model to depict the arrangement of grits and bond within the wheel and by estimating the properties of wheel at different locations using volume fraction averages approach. Groove shape predictions are based on the temperature distribution within the laser dressed wheel. Results of the theoretical groove widths are compared with the experimental results obtained on laser dressed Al 2 O 3 surface.
