Chronic heart failure continues to be an exciting field of clinical research. Up to 5% of the population have heart failure or symptoms suggestive of the condition, and the mortality is high (up to 30% within 3 months of diagnosis and 10% per year thereafter), but current therapy approximately doubles life expectancy. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published guidance on the diagnosis and management of heart failure, providing an authoritative overview of therapeutics and emphasizing the importance of non-drug management and the need for good communication, education and follow-up.
