We wish to report our experience with patellaplasty in total knee replacement. Patellaplasty involves excision of the deep articular surface of the patella. The raw surface of the patella is then left to articulate with the total knee arthroplasty. This procedure was carried out in 26 osteoarthritic knees undergoing total knee replacement. All of these patients were followed with a minimum follow up of 1 year. Of 14 patients (15 knees) followed up so far, two patients complained of severe anterior knee pain necessitating patella resurfacing; two others fractured their patella. This high rate of complications led us to abandon this procedure despite the other 11 knees having a satisfactory outcome. The rest of the knees are being followed up and the results are being analysed and will be presented in the meeting.
