The purpose of this poster is to share tools that registered dietitians can use with patients who are focused on weight loss. Three handouts were developed for use in the college health setting and are appropriate for the adult population, particularly women who are chronic dieters. The American Dietetic Association position paper on weight management (January 1997) states that dietetic professionals should include behavioral and psychological goals in weight management interventions. Individuals who succumb to societal pressure to be thin and focus solely on weight-loss often fail, which inevitably reduces self-esteem and can lead to disturbed eating patterns. This poster will highlight cognitive-behavioral tools that help patients develop healthful eating patterns, improve body image and be more realistic about their weight and nutrition goals. The reproducible handouts contain information on internal cues for eating; healthier weight and body image concepts and recognizing and reducing binge eating behaviors.
