An investigation of the temperature dependence of the effective self-diffusion coefficient D eff in model membranes, in the sediment of the unicellular alga Chlorella p. and in plant tissues has enabled the activational nature of the intercellular diffusional transfer of water through the barrier regulating structures of cells to be obtained. The calculated value of the activation energy of diffusion (E a = 6-8 kcal/mole) is assigned to transfer over the symplast system. The inclusion of a temperature-dependent change in the permeability of the intercellular contacts under the influence of Gd 3+ ions explains the deviation of the temperature dynamics of D eff in the 5 to 30-35°C range: as the temperature rises, the normal increase in the self-diffusion coefficient of water in the cells is controlled by a decrease in the permeability of the intercellular contacts.
