The existence of stable glass-forming liquid mixtures in the RCl 3 -AlCl 3 (R Nd, Gd) binary systems is established. Based on Raman spectroscopic measurements, a structural model is proposed for these glasses where tile main participating units are 'AlCl 4 ' and in part 'Al 2 Cl 7 '. The coordination of the lanthanide is nine-fold for neodymium and eight-fold for gadolinium.
