Objectives: To describe the types of patients in need of advanced life support as supplied by the MICU in 1994.Results: The MICU was called and established patient contact 4521 times. The calls could be divided into two categories; Acute illness 2901 (64%) calls and Injury 1311 (29%) calls - table I. A third group unknown comprises 309 (7%) patients with definite signs of death or cardiac arrest, in which it was impossible to identify the primary cause. The 875 calls for psychiatric injuries were dominated by opioid overdose in drug addicts. The remaining calls in the injury group were mainly due to trauma of chest, head or extremities. Injuries consisted of 1111 accidents, 123 cases of suicide, and only 60 calls to violence.Conclusion: The MICU staff encounter a large number of patients presenting a broad spectrum of disease-categories requiring specialized experience and skills.
