The calcaneus is the largest bone of the foot. It is at once ground support, beginning of the arch of the foot, end of the tarsal canal and insertion site of many structures in the plantar beam (muscles and ligaments) and the large Achilles tendon. It is a parallelepipedal bone, all six faces of which are to be considered separately so as to obtain a spatial understanding of the whole. We present the characteristics and insertions of the calcaneus.
