An important feature of Moraxella catarrhalis is the production of β-lactamases, which causes resistance to the penicillins. Restriction enzyme analysis was able to distinguish between the bro-1 and bro-2 β-lactamase-encoding genes from 89 clinical isolates of M. catarrhalis. This is a rapid, simple and cost effective method of characterizing these genes.
