Abandoned chalk mines near Bury St Edmunds, UK, have been made safe and surveyed in detail. Providing safe access involved sinking a new 14.3 m deep, 1.83 m diameter bolted segmental access shaft; installing timber headings; improving and stabilising passages, and casting in-situ concrete slabs incorporating cover and frame. Surface dynamic probe tests were conducted as part of the survey to identify voids. Boreholes for CCTV inspection were subsequently sunk. Results of the detailed condition survey will be used to determine possible future uses of the land and associated costs.
