A series of Y 1 - x Sm x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 6 + δ [Y(Sm)BCO] single crystals were grown by the crystal pulling method, By substitution of Sm for Y, the growth rate was obviously increased, it was nearly 2 times higher with a Sm content x of 0.119 than that of YBCO. ICP and EPMA results show that the Sm content x ranged from 0.059 to 0.303 and it was almost uniformly distributed in single crystals. The Sm substitution content can be controlled by the processing temperature. With an increase in the processing temperature, the Sm concentration in the liquid increased, which led to an increase of the Sm substitution content in single crystals, High critical temperatures T c of 91±1 K were obtained from oxygenated Y 1 - x Sm x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 6 + δ single crystals grown under air and 1 arm oxygen pressure, indicating that there is no depression in T c with Sm substitution. Compared with the SmBCO system, T c tends to be not so sensitive to the growth atmosphere of the oxygen partial pressure in the Y(Sm)BCO system.
