Neutral heteroleptic cobalt complexes [CoL 2 L′] (L′=2,2′-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline) with the anionic form of a series of methyl-substituted N-2-pyridylsulfonamide ligands (HL) have been synthesized by the electrochemical oxidation of the metal in an acetonitrile solution of the sulfonamide ligand and the corresponding coligand L′. The compounds were characterized by microanalysis, vibrational and electronic spectroscopy and some examples by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of the compounds show the metal in a distorted octahedral geometry, [N6] or [N4O2], that depends on the position of the substituent on the pyridine ring.
