Le vieillissement est caractérisé par une fragilité musculo-articulaire susceptible de causer des difficultés d’équilibre postural et par conséquent l’augmentation du risque de chute (Romero et Stelmach, 2003 ; Nascimbeni et al., 2010). Ce phénomène est caractérisé aussi par une diminution progressive de la sécrétion de mélatonine (MEL) qui s’accompagne souvent d’apparition de troubles du sommeil (Claustrat et al., 2009 ; Valenti et al., 2016). L’objectif de la présente étude était de vérifier l’effet d’une ingestion nocturne de MEL (10mg) sur le sommeil et l’équilibre postural chez des personnes âgées.Douze sujets âgés, de sexe masculin (58±5,7 ans ; 169,0±3,8cm ; 72,7±4,9kg) ont participé à cette étude. Le protocole expérimental consistait à réaliser deux sessions d’évaluation après ingestion de MEL ou de placebo la veille des tests. Lors de chaque session d’évaluation, des tests de la qualité du sommeil (questionnaire de Spiegel) et des mesures de stabilité (plateforme de force SATEL®) ont été effectués.L’analyse statistique a montré une amélioration de la qualité du sommeil des participants suite à l’ingestion nocturne de MEL. De plus, la longueur X et la longueur Y de l’équilibre postural dynamique avant/arrière (F=24,2 ; p<0,05 ; F=32,6 ; p<0,05) et droite/gauche (F=53,7 ; p<0,05 ; F=35,5 ; p<0,05), respectivement pour la longueur X et la longueur Y, ont diminué avec la MEL par rapport au placebo.L’ingestion nocturne de MEL (10mg) a permis d’améliorer la qualité du sommeil et l’équilibre chez des personnes âgées. Cependant, une étude récente a montré que la MEL (1–3mg) ne modifiait pas ces deux paramètres chez des femmes ménopausées (Amstrup et al., 2015). La divergence des résultats peut être expliquée par la différence des doses, des protocoles d’évaluation et des populations étudiées (hommes vs femmes).
