Treatment of non-adherence is a challenging and multifactorial issue in CF. CF CARE (CF Collaborative Adherence Resources & Education) was developed to support healthcare professionals (HCPs) in this task. Goals were to: enhance the HCP-patient relationship; provide educational resources to address adherence challenges; and cascade resources from international to national and regional levels. From November 2013 to June 2014, an international committee of CF specialists identified three key themes and strategies to inform and support development of CF CARE: an Adherence Lead training programme; individualised treatment plans (ITPs); and didactic content supporting HCPs to deliver patient education. These were developed into practical clinical applications by dedicated working groups. Another group developed a visual analogue scale tool software application (VASANA) to measure impact of interventions on adherence. In May 2014, Adherence Lead training meetings were held in Manchester, UK and Dublin, Ireland. A committee meeting in June 2014 discussed outcomes and future development of CF CARE tools. To date, motivational interviewing training modules and VASANA and ITP software applications have been developed. CF CARE content and tools will be available to participating countries, with local adaptations. They are expected to enrich and enhance the HCP-patient relationship, most importantly to improve communication about adherence issues. In the near future, an online platform will host CF CARE resources, impact of Adherence Lead training will also be assessed, and a forum provided as ongoing support for attendees.
