A specially designed gown which may be worn by patients receiving radiotherapy to the breast, has recently been introduced at the Plymouth Oncology Unit in the U.K. This was developed as a direct result of a patient's suggestion that stripping to the waist at a chair and then walking across the treatment room to the machine was a very embarrassing experience, especially at a time when a patient invariably feels self conscious about their breast and their whole body image. Consequently, a gown was designed which could be worn during treatment, after being donned in the privacy of a changing room. During the treatment the gown may still be worn as it has a front shoulder opening which allows only the breast needing treatment to be revealed. Twenty patients were asked about the use of this gown and if they preferred it.It is often easy for staff to lose sight of how the patient might feel whilst walking across a room in a semi-dressed state in front of three or four people. The honesty of our patient who initiated the idea and who reminded us of the importance of the patient's viewpoint, was very much appreciated.
