With the recent abundant discoveries of shale gas, there are tremendous opportunities and challenges for the creation of value-added shale gas supply chains. The paper provides an overview of shale gas monetization with focus on downstream processing. First, a background is given on shale gas reserves, production, and characteristics. Then, an overall monetization map is discussed by outlining the primary intermediates and products that can be manufactured from the main hydrocarbon components in shale gas and the common conversion technologies. Next, attention is given to five key products: methanol, liquid transportation fuels, ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. For each product, the markets, chemical pathways, conversion technologies, derivatives, and common uses are given. The paper also provides statistics, challenges, opportunities, and insights related to the main factors impacting shale gas usage in the production of value-added chemicals and products.
