The fluorine doped amorphous carbon nanoparticles (a-C:F NPs) films with sizes 50–100nm were deposited on polyethylene terephthalate in an atmosphere of CF 4 by a 90°-bend magnetic filtered cathodic arc plasma system. The surface morphology of a-C:F NPs films was observed by field emission scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The microstructure and chemical bonding nature...
A combustion flame method is used to synthesize large single crystal diamond in ambient atmosphere. The basic of this technique was originally described by Hirose and Kondo in 1988 [Hirose H, Komaki K. Eur Pat Appl 1988:EP324538]. The advantage of this method is the high growth rate of diamond films, which is about 60μm/h [Alers P, Hanni W, Hintermann HE. A comparative study of laminar and turbulent...
Chemically functionalised single-walled carbon nanotubes were formed using sonication in a mixture of concentrated sulphuric and nitric acids for varying lengths of time which resulted in carboxylic acid group functionalisation, predominantly at the ends. The carboxylic acid groups were used to form an ionic bond with dodecylamine. The weight of this complex was used to monitor the number of carboxylic...
A monolayer and a few layers of carbon sp 2 -bonded networks were torn and folded by the tip of an atomic force microscope at the steps on newly cleaved highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. It was found that the preferential breaking directions and folding axes are along the symmetry directions of the graphite hexagonal structure. Depending on the force exerted by the tip, breaking may occur...
We report a spontaneous ignition of carbon nanotubes/polyurethane composite under He–Ne laser. The ignition of the composite is caused by rapid increase of the temperature to at least 660K due to absorption of light by carbon nanotubes. This temperature was estimated from G band downshift of the carbon nanotube caused due to the bond loosening due to thermal expansion of the bonds. The morphology...
This paper examines the challenge posed by the measurement of thickness of sub-50nm diamond-like carbon (DLC) films deposited onto silicon substrates. We compared contact profilometry (CP), optical profilometry (OP), contact atomic force microscopy (CAFM), tapping atomic force microscopy (TAFM) and X-ray reflectometry (XRR). Generally, CP, CAFM, TAFM and XRR give similar thickness values except for...
A cryogenic crushing method to produce short carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is described. Crushing CNTs at liquid nitrogen temperature allows them to be shortened and make them appreciably soluble in a solvent without any dispersant. Typical lengths of less than 500nm were obtained from 30min crushing. The CNTs were characterized using atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric, and Raman analyses.
Pyrolytic carbon layers were deposited from methane/oxygen/argon mixtures on planar substrates (silicon wafers) at a total pressure of 100kPa, a maximum gas residence time of 2s and a temperature of 1100°C. The depositions were performed in a hot-wall reactor with the substrate oriented parallel to the gas flow. Particular attention was paid to factors that influence the reproducibility of the deposited...
A number of functionalized graphite oxides were prepared by treatment of graphite oxide (GO) with organic isocyanates. These isocyanate-treated GOs (iGOs) can then be exfoliated into functionalized graphene oxide nanoplatelets that can form a stable dispersion in polar aprotic solvents. Characterization of iGOs by FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis suggested that the isocyanate treatment results...
