The use of the operating microscope during anterior cervical decompressions can markedly improve visualization forthe surgeon as well as the assistants. The enhanced visualization can result in safer, faster, and more complete decompressions. After decompression and grafting, numerous cervical plating systems are available. These can provide immediate stability to the reconstruction, decreasing the risk of graft extrusions. Meticulous care must be exercised in sizing and applying the plate to avoid complications. The long-term outcome of arthrodeses augmented by plates and the true incidence of complications associated with cervical plates are unknown.
