A new class of monomers, diesters of 3-butene-1,2-diol, was explored as comonomers with vinyl acetate (VAc) in latexes. 3-Butene-1,2-diol dipropanoate (BDDP), dibutanoate (BDDB), and di(2-ethyl)hexanoate (BDD2EH) were copolymerized with VAc via emulsion polymerization. Monomer conversions were all good and particle sizes of the latexes were similar to the controls. Latex T g was lower as the alkyl chain length increased. Latexes containing the BDDP and BDDB had very poor hydrolytic stability, however, latexes containing BDD2EH had remarkably good hydrolytic stability.
