The finite element simulation is now widely used in the design of stamping tools. That is, the trial and error procedure is replaced by simulation in which defects of sheet forming processes are predicted and evaluated. The theoretical background and numerical implementation of a three dimensional finite element code ITAS-3D, developed with support of The Sheet Metal Forming Simulation Research Group in Japan are discussed. Structure of an integrated stamping tool design CAE software system under development is also presented.
