The ability to move efficiently through a large range of motion is essential for the successful completion of numerous tasks in daily living, work and sports. Stretching exercises are often advocated to maintain and improve range of motion. Although stretching is an important part of many sport and rehabilitation programs, the ideal prescription for promoting improvements in range of motion and decreases in stiffness remains unknown. This paper examines the techniques for assessing tissue changes associated with stretching, the effect of different speeds of stretching, the number of repetitions to perform and the influence of different types of stretching. It also provides comment upon the physiological mechanisms thought to be associated with improvements in range of motion and biomechanical parameters after stretching.NA.
